Originally the site of U.S. Steel’s South Works mill, Lakeside’s brownfield industrial past is slowly transitioning from steel mill to innovative mill. The nearly 700-acre parcel of land is bounded by 79th Street on the north and the Calumet River of the south. It extends to Burley Street and Green Bay Avenue on the west, and Lake Michigan on the east. As a peninsula that extends into the lake, the site is larger than Chicago’s Loop business district.
